The people of Egbalor Community in Ebubu, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State has set the pace for others to emulate and institute what it tagged “Sports in Culture”, a composition of old cultural plays ranging from Ngoro, to katanka, epelle, swey, egelege, Ofe’mbo eta e etc.
The event which is geared towards reviving cultural norms is also targeted at strengthening cultural values, awaking social life, uniting the people, breeding the spirit of sportsmanship and educating the younger generation on the essence and relevance of sports in culture.
Declaring the event open was the Paramount Ruler of Egbalor community HRH Emere Godwin Y. Chinwi who charged the community to sustain the pace they have set and further create more activities that will engage the youths. He recalled sad events that has ravaged the community in recent past and called for a solemn prayer for the departed soul of two illustrious sons of Egbalor, (Engr Simeon Nwaforlor and Oguda Nkine). He further thanked the organizers of the programme for putting together such landmark event and challenged them with the cash prize of One hundred thousand naira (#100,000,00) if they continue in the same spirit.
Also present at the event was the President General of O ela’obor Eleme Elder Israel Abbey (JP) who commended the effort of Egbalor youths and urged them to continue in the same light so other communities can learn from them.
More so, was the Chairman of Grass Development Initiative (GDI) in Eleme LGA Comr Phylle Te-nwaji who also advised the youths and further corrected some misconceptions observed in their presentation
The high point of the event of the event was captured when some elders to include former secretary of Eleme Local Government Council, Sir Hon John Kamalo joined in a craft competition, seating on the ground with both legs stretched out.
